Opinion:
NHL, another year, another game, they are all the same... right? Wrong, I have never had as much fun as I did with NHL 98 on Genesis (or Sega Mega Drive as we called it in Russia).  Although, that is hands down my favorite NHL game of all time, it does not mean that NHL 08 is any worse.  Aside from being about hockey it is a completely different looking game.

NHL 08, brought everything I would have expected from it, however, it may be that my interest in hockey has fainted a bit, or maybe its the sheer abundance of other excellent games on the market, but I dont know what it is exactly but NHL 08 did not grab me like NHL 98 did where I would loose dozens of hours playing USSR vs Canada games.

I think I know, I think I figured it out. It is the emphasis on the actual NHL teams, which I dont really give a hoot about. Go figure, NHL game about NHL teams. Crazy right? Perhaps it is the warmonger in me that is more excited about nation versus nation hockey, USSR vs Canada, vs USA etc. Yes there are those Olympic Games that have that, but I want to be part of the classic match ups from the 70s and 80s, I dont care about the new players nearly as much as I do about legends of hockey.

Putting my rosy glasses aside, NHL 08 is a solid iteration on the franchise; however at this point there is no reason to get it with 09, 10, and NHL 11, behind us. Get one of those in a discount bin.
